The first poker game exact date and details are still unknown. But there is some travelers’ data and facts about those gambling cards, which were popular among both ordinary people as well as rich one.

The old card game, which has been significantly changed over multiple centuries, now significantly differs from the entertainment, which existed before.

The things we are aware of about poker: its origin history refers to the 10th century. Curiously, the Chinese emperor Mu Zeng loved to lay out paper dominoes. The excitement flared up even more, when the courtiers bet on a particular alignment type. Ancient papyruses say the Egyptians also played cards in the 12-13th centuries.

Further, the historical chain is interrupted until the 15th century, when the game was first noticed in Persia. By the way, Persian people invented joker. The Persians had lots of similar card games, one of which was especially loved by aristocrats. The deck had 96 cards, cut out in the thin plates form of ivory or valuable wood types. Ordinary people played cards as well, but used a deck, consisting of 25 paper pictures and 5 suits.

The Persians were active in trading with Europe. They brought in a card game together with both carpets and silk fabrics. The current format entertainment quickly became popular among British, French and Germans. The rules sounded in their own way in each language, but the main idea remained unchanged: the participant, who collected the most powerful cards combination, won. It was possible to play for money, making any bets. Gambling firmly entrenched in the Europeans’ minds, people lost their fortunes, and unpaid debts became the bloodshed cause.

Gerolamo Cardano, Spanish mathematician, engineer, doctor and astrologer, first described the poker strategy, given mathematical algorithms, in his «Gambling book».

A new concept, namely bluff, has been added to the game art. It was required to have great endurance and artistry in order to win. There is a legend, which tells about a certain Adely – a lady of blue blood, who needed to take acting classes and take poker lessons in order to free her son from prison, who was convicted of cards debt. The woman bluffed so skillfully that she beat even highly-experienced masters. As a result, after once her son has been released, she continued gambling. She was 87 years old when she was seen in a gambling house. Hence the conclusion – emotions control allows winning in any game.

French colonists brought poker to Canada, and from there the game ended up in the USA, in New Orleans, given the modern form and becoming a national treasure.

Americans think that the poker progenitor is the famous cheater Jonathan Harrington Green, nicknamed «Captain Green» or «favorite of Fortune». He first described the sailors’ card fun and called it «poker». Once some lucky man managed to win $ 23000 – this amount was quite big at the beginning of the 19th century. When Jonathan was adulthood, he shared his tricks by publishing «Shulers’ Tricks Exposing» book, which became a bestseller at that time.


Poker: modernity history

Poker has become increasingly famous and highly demanded all over the world. The rules are supplemented by new features, new salons with special card tables were opened as well. There emerged those types, which are still held at the popularity peak, for example, Texas Hold’em.

Texas hosted the first massive poker competition, won by Crandell Addington, in 1968. Addington still holds a world record by the wins number in poker tournaments. The 1968 event was the World Series of Poker (WSOP) source, the most prestigious international competition. The first official WSOP tour took place at Benina Horseshoe casino two years later. The event took place in Las Vegas and lasted for a week.

It is required to highlight such iconic players as Johnny Moss, Stu Anger, Amarillo Slim, Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese. Their portraits today adorn gambling institutions halls.
